Before coffee-table art books were common, Italy had I Maestri del Colore. Published by Fratelli Fabbri Editori in Milan between 1963 and 1967 and sold at newsstands across the country, the series put real art scholarship in ordinary hands: one master painter per issue, a short essay in Italian, and sixteen full-color plates in a folio softcover.
These are original 1960s issues, sold one by one. Frame the plates, stack them on the coffee table, or shelve a run of them as a set. Each is a piece of Italian publishing history from the boom years.
