SUNDAY SLOWDOWN | The power of words

“Choose words that uplift and energize, they are the architect of your mindset.“

-Jacqlyn Burnett

Words hold power. They are the foundation of our daily interactions and the articulation of our most personal desires and future manifestations. Whether written down on paper,  spoken silently or out loud, words bring our intentions into being.

Abracadabra is word most of us identify with the fantasy of our childhood, but the etymology dates back to ancient time. Its original meaning is “I will create as I speak.” We all have experienced the magic of writing down an idea in our journal, or speaking about our dreams and desires with a trusted friend or colleague, and see it come into being. Words are our personal prayer. Whether kept silent or shared with others, they are a vocalization of how we move through the world. The soul speaks in symbols, but it also listens in language. Words are a collaboration with the unseen.

This practice of speaking in ways that feel uplifting and energizing not only applies to ourselves, but also how we interact with others in the world. I am reminded of Yoko Ono's book,  Acorn, a collection of personal instructions, mindful reflections and meditative reflections. One of the entries called “Cleaning Piece,” is a series of prompts to conjure cleansing and healing. There are five instructions she offers. Cleaning Piece III,  in particular,  stood out for me:

Try to say nothing negative about anybody.
a) for three days
b) for forty-five days
c) for three months
See what happens to your life.

So this week, be deliberate with what you say. Speak beauty. Write about possibility. Restrain and refrain from saying anything negative about anybody, including and especially about yourself, and watch your perspective of the people and the world around you change.
